Residents feel short changed by low ceilings

HOW would you feel if your new house has such a low ceiling that installing a ceiling fan could be a risky thing to do?

This is the problem faced by 66 house owners at a housing project in Section 5, Bukit Serdang. The height of the ground-floor ceiling of their new houses is only 2.4m from the floor compared to the 2.7m to 3m in an average house.

According to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has informed him that the minimum height for the ceiling of a residential house is 2.7m.

Liew said the MPSJ would call a meeting soon to discuss the problem.

“There are 75 double-storey terrace houses in four rows at the site. The row where the show unit stands is not affected with the low-ceiling problem. The other 66 units were built with low ceilings,” he said.

Liew said residents had complained that the show unit they viewed before purchasing their houses was not built with a low ceiling.

“Residents have complained to the developer many times but the problem has not been solved,” he said.

“Officers from the MBPJ Building and Architecture Department visited the affected houses recently and have agreed to hold a meeting with the house owners and developer to find a solution to the problem,” Liew said.

He said the houses cost RM290,000 each and the owners were given their keys last month.
