Couple seriously hurt in explosion at their home

KUALA LUMPUR: A couple was seriously injured after the tube between their gas cooker and the tank exploded, causing a fire.

Mohd Khairul Faiz, 35, and his wife Rohida Ramli, 29, suffered severe burns to their faces and bodies in the 1.30pm incident yesterday. A friend of the couple who was in the house suffered minor injuries to his body.

It was learnt that the couple was cooking in their sixth floor apartment in Desa Pandan here.

Officer in charge of the Jalan Pudu Fire and Rescue Department Mohd Ramali Arbai said the blast destroyed the kitchen and some parts of the apartment.

“We believe that the fire was caused by the tube exploding in the kitchen,” he said.

He said firemen took about 15 minutes to control the flames.

A condominium worker said he heard a sound from the unit while doing his rounds.

“They have three children. Luckily they were not around, otherwise there could have been more people injured,” he said.

The couple was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
