18/06/2007 The Star

THE Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) has built 8,493 housing units in the state since its inception about 20 years ago.

Perda chairman Datuk Helmi Rashid said 622 were super low-cost units, 3,951 low-cost, 159 medium low-cost and 3,760 medium-cost units.

He said Perda had also built houses jointly with the private sector in Seberang Prai and island for bumiputras.

He added that Perda had also set up 245 stalls in Seberang Prai to help small-scale bumiputra traders to start their own businesses.

He said the stalls were rented out between RM50 and RM300 monthly.

“We have also constructed 38 buildings for light industries and rented them to small-scale bumiputra entrepreneurs between RM350 and RM1,500 monthly.”
