Rep wants unit to maintain
public projects

JOHOR BARU: A property management unit should be set up to ensure that
public infrastructure and amenities are well maintained.
“Some government agencies think of themselves as the implementing agency
only, and are not bothered after a project is completed, Gan Ping Siew (BN -
Mengkibol) told the State Assembly here yesterday.
“Thus, a big part of the project is not well maintained by those who take
delivery of the project,” he said, adding that this led to wastage.
He cited the landscape project at the recreational park in Gunung Lambak
that was abandoned.
“No allocation was made for maintenance (of the park) by the National
Landscape Department since the project was completed and handed over to the
municipal council,” he said.
Gan also pointed out the weaknesses of the low-cost housing policy, which
requires developers to provide 40% of low cost homes.
He said this led to an imbalance of low cost and other type homes in various
townships.
Gan proposed that developers contribute cash to a low cost housing
foundation as compensation instead of building more low cost homes in areas
that already have an oversupply.
During question time earlier, state Works and Housing Committee chairman
Datuk Baderi Dasuki said there was an oversupply of houses priced at
RM50,000 in Segamat and Kluang.
He added that for medium low cost houses priced at RM80,000, there was an
oversupply in Johor Baru, Segamat and Kluang.
Datuk Harun Abdullah (BN - Tanjung Surat) suggested that Mathematics and
Science papers be set in two languages so that rural students were not
placed at a disadvantage.
“If Chinese and Tamil-medium schools can sit for exams in dual-language, why
can’t the national schools do so?” he said.
Harun said teachers he spoke to were not confident that their students could
do well if the exams were in English.
Abdul Aziz Sapian (BN -Nusajaya) joined the chorus of state leaders in
convincing locals not to be alarmed by the opening up of Iskandar
Development Region (IDR) to foreign investors.
“We should welcome these foreign investors as they will be improving our
economy,” he said. |
