Mewah Court folks want a
better retaining wall

THE retaining wall built behind Mewah Court Apartments in Taman Cheras Mewah,
Kuala Lumpur is not high enough and might be unable to prevent a landslide.
Mewah Court Apartments Residents Association president Tung Siew Loong said
based on an agreement with the previous developer of the landed properties
being built behind the apartments, the wall was supposed to be higher and
longer.
“The new developer who took over has constructed a wall short of residents’
expectations. We experienced a mud flood a few weeks ago and fear a
landslide might occur in the future,” he said.
“The mud flood came right up to our parking bays and left silt in the drains
at our blocks. The developer sent his workers to clear the drains but they
left before the work was done,” said Mewah Court Apartments RA
vice-president Felix Lim.
Not good enough: The retaining wall behind the Mewah Court Apartment in
Taman Cheras Mewah is not tall or high enough to prevent a landslide.
“The water is murky as a result and stagnant in parts. Mosquitoes have also
increased in numbers since the project started,” said committee member Paul
Loo.
Tung said there were 160 apartment units at the 10-storey blocks built five
years ago.
“If a landslide or a bigger soil erosion occurs, the local council will
force residents to move. Why should we incur cost through no fault of our
own?” he said.
The wall is located close to a playground. Since the erosion, parents have
prevented their children from playing at the playground, fearing a bigger
mud flood.
Residents have met up with the developer in question to request the company
to build a better wall. They are still awaiting the developer’s response.
